“There was nowhere to go but everywhere, so just keep on rolling under the stars.”
YouTube Series, 50 Days on the Road at 50 Years Old
I was smiling in my helmet, feeling blessed for what I had experienced and excited to reach home. A flood of thoughts and realizations came forward and greeted me and then faded. Inspiration sometimes is hard to hold onto. I’m hoping as the days pass and I think on the trip, that I’ll be able to capture some of those feelings and put them on paper. Sometimes thoughts, realizations, and ideas are like trying to catch lightning in a bottle. As I rode, I didn’t try to hold too tight to those thoughts and ideas. It was like all the wonderful moments of this trip. You just have to let it unfold and “be here now,” be in the moment.
It’s a paradox. In looking at all the places I’ve been to so far in this country, I can say that we are as different as we are the same. Like all people on this planet we share core common motivations and at our core we are the same in many respects. Suffice to say our humanity binds us. In the USA there’s a tendency to say, we’re Americans and for that to mean we belong to one club. While we’re all citizens of the same country and bound by the ideals of the Bill of Rights and the Constitution, it probably ends there with respect to Team USA.
We were sharing our beatific experience. Our blissful travel adventures and how it affected us. It had little to do with where we’ve physically been and for how long, and more to do with where our heads were at. It had all to do with the energy we were carrying with us, the feeling we had in our hearts, and the joy of the journeys we were on. Kindred spirits connecting on the road.
I have come to believe that adventure finds you, you don’t find adventure. Four weeks on the road! The Adventure continues!
“The occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way.” That’s the definition of Serendipity and that I believe is when adventure finds you.
It’s important to exhale, to let go, and to punctuate the timeline of our life. Moments, experiences, and adventures that are big or small are the things that punctuate the story of our lives. It’s the thing that marks the way things were and how things are evolving.
What really stood out for me were the people along the way. What makes a good ride great, are the people you meet on the road. Road trips and traveling in general are about great riding and awesome sights, but more importantly it’s about the people you meet along the way.
I had it in my mind that Phase 1 was launching this experience and Phase 2 was breaking through to a new way to settle into the journey out west. The environment and surroundings are a big factor and one that I knew would begin to have a profound impact.
I have a strong desire to put the miles on and find a new rhythm to the trip. A few more days on the road before I settle in and find my rhythm. New surroundings and new energy on the horizon.
Freedom is a state of mind. It’s about how you view each day with hope, open to the possibilities of change and choice. Freedom to work to change your circumstances to something more positive. That’s a big part of why I’m doing this trip. Freedom to defy convention, to follow a dream, to breakout of what’s expected, and to breakthrough to something new.
As I pulled away from the house I wasn’t thinking about 50 days. I simply was happy to be on the bike. The wheels were turning. All my dreaming and planning resulted in the “rubber meeting the road” literally.
There is the fear of being away from home and my loved ones from an extended period of time. A fear of leaving people and stuff behind. It’s funny, there is less fear about the unknown and what lies ahead, and more fear about letting go. I really want to do something about the worrying and fears. Letting go of those two things are desperately need. This is part of the work I want to do to find that “best version” of myself.
On January 2, 2018 I submitted my resignation at work. After about 28 years of the corporate game it was time to turn my attention to something new. Time to embark on a new adventure.
“Transcendental Travel” as an idea, as a concept, represented how I’ve been traveling for years, both as a solo traveler and with my family. Immersive travel experiences that energized me, inspired me, and fueled future dreams were something I made happen yearly. There was always a desire to take it further and to do more and I was open to the possibilities of what that meant.

I will continue to reflect on this journey as a way to propel me forward. The 50@50 journey is rocket fuel for whatever comes next. My memories of the trip are the sparks that ignite that fuel to keep me moving forward. Dreams and memories are the inspiration. There is no doubt that this journey has shaped me in new ways. Even if it feels like a dream, I am still renewed and traveling in new directions.
